Travel Woes - Rising Fuel Prices And Dropping Dollar Values
The summer vacation is an annual ritual in most of the world. Getting up and going is just what we do. That being said, trips this year and in the future may be much shorter. Why? Things are getting expensive and will continue to do so.
It has often been said that the oil and dollar are tied together. Well, the current situation seems to prove as much. As fuel prices rise dramatically, the dollar is plunging. Fuel, in particular, is not expected to return to lower prices.
So, are there any ways we can deal with the increased cost of traveling? There are always little things you can do and, in this case, some big ones as well. The key in many cases is to think beyond the normal travel strategies.
The biggest cost you will often run into when traveling is the cost of your flight. Obviously, you can go nuts on hotels and the like, but flights usually are the biggest expense. So, are there strategies we can use to get around the cost?
Not all flights are created the same price wise. The first factor is the time of year you are flying. To save a boat load of money, try flying during the off season for the location. You'll save money on the flight, lodgings and basically everything.
You pay for brand names and frills when flying just like you do with any service or product. Charter flights come without the brand name or frills, but they are cheaper than normal flights. You can save hundreds traveling on them.
What if you are really looking for a cheap flight? The only real answer is to fly air courier. Yes, these really exist. Flights are rarely free, but they can be had for $100 or so. Look up the Air Courier Association for more information.
You can also save money on the personal front. In short, we are talking about seriously roughing it. Despite the horror movies of the same name, Hostels are generally safe and a tremendously good deal. Follow the backpackers to find them.
Another great way to save money on accommodations is to hit the train station. Most have a booth where locals rent out a room in their house to you. This can also be a good way to meet the locals and get a taste for the real life in the area.
With oil demand growing and supplies dwindling, there is great concern about whether traveling abroad might become a more difficult proposition for most people. It need not so long as you are creative with your money. Just go!
