Renting A Car On A Budget
If you are someone who travels a great deal then perhaps it is time you considered budget car rental; true, taxis can be convenient as well but that's only when you do not have to be anywhere particular in a hurry and don't mind the high cost of each journey. Sometimes though, the companies that rent budget cars, supply cars that are at the bottom end of the spectrum.
I am not trying to put you off renting a car, just making sure you are aware that some companies will try to rent you something that will not be suitable. To avoid this here are a few tips to get the best deal out of your rental car.
The first easy option is to be in control of what you spend by finding a budget car rental company online that lets you set your own financial limit. Some of these sites are just comparison sites but well worth your time as they have done all the hard work for you.
If you are lucky and decide to book a fly and drive deal for instance, then you may find the rental company has upgraded your vehicle but this is less likely if you book with the airline themselves. Unfortunately, airlines although convenient aren't really the more economic way to go, their car rental prices are hardly budget, and tend to be higher than those of outside the airline industry companies.
There are bargains to be found on the internet and that also means budget car rentals as well. Often the discounts you are offered are only available to online customers. Do not always take the first offer that comes your way, unless you are limited on time because there are bound to be other discount offers available if you have the time to take a look. Plus, and this is the good bit; all this can be done from your home.
Another thing to ask for is whether your credit card company has negotiated special discounts with the budget car rental company you are going to use. It is quite common these days for a company to have made an arrangement with other companies to give discounts to their employees or members so you may be lucky enough to receive a further discount here.
Before you drive the rental car away, carry out a thorough check for damage. These cars often take a few knocks so if there is any damage; make sure the renter is aware of them. Not only the outside but also check the inside and make sure all the controls etc. work as the last thing you want is a hefty repair bill when you return the car.
More often than not your existing vehicle policy will cover the rental car insurance needed but it is always best to check first. Even though rental car insurance isn't going to cost you a fortune, there is no point in paying for it if you are already covered; whatever the case, you must still have insurance coverage when you rent a car so don't try and skip it to save money.
Always make sure you have auto insurance as the penalties for driving without adequate coverage are severe.
